WW1 hill attack
Dreamt up by Jonas T
I was in a British unit assigned to attack a hill in World War One. We were attacking in a line on a broad front and had to go up a hill. There were no enemy ahead of us. Just as we approached the top of the broad and fairly steep hill, enemy appeared at the top and began firing. Men were dying all around alongside me. We returned fire and killed nearly all of the enemy but the relief evaporated when more enemy appeared at the top of the hill.
It dawned on me with horror that we had no idea how many men might lie in wait beyond the crest of the hill. We successfully suppressed the second wave of defenders only for them to again be replenished. By this time, most of the men in my unit were dead. I was trying to beat a retreat when I woke up with a start.
